Searching for a conference paper

How to find a conference paper in the library collection is explained here step by step. We take the following reference as an example:

Example

Boström, O., Svennson, M.Y., Aldman, B. et al., 1996. A new neck injury criterion candidate - based on injury findings in the cervical spine ganglia after experimental neck extension trauma. In: Proceedings of the International Conference on the Biomechanics of Impact, Dublin, Ireland.

In a reference list in a journal article, a textbook, dissertation or other publication you may find references of interest to you. If you wish to read these publications, proceed as follows:

  1. Identify the type of publication (e.g. journal article, conference paper, textbook, conference proceedings, dissertation or other). In this case that has already happened: we are searching for a conference paper.

  2. Find the conference title as mentioned in the reference ("Biomechanics of impact"). In the catalogue, this is the key to finding the paper.

  3. Now select the Title index in the library catalogue, and enter "biomechanics of impact". It is not always necessary to enter the full title; you may apply ( * ) right truncation when searching via the Title index.

  4. You will find a short list of titles, among which is "The biomechanics of impacts : international IRCOBI conference : proceedings..". Sometimes the exact title of a conference is not clear. Then try to search via search method <Advanced search> and index <Title words>. Enter a word from the conference title, enter a second title word if useful, and restrict search result to publication type "Conference proceedings".

  5. At location you see in which section of the library the conference proceedings are held, as well as the shelfmark. The location also indicates if the volume (year) you need is available. Click button Availability for detailed information on availability.

  6. Go to (one of) the Library location(s) indicated and retrieve proceedings from shelf indicated by shelfmark.
