Searching by author

Searching by author can be done in various ways. Which way is best depends partly on the completeness of your data. Wildcards may be used.

 

The search method <Index search> is recommended for performing author search as described in the following table. This method is more practical than the other ones.

Tip. If only the family name is known and one or more words from the title, then a search result can be achieved quickly via search methods <Search> and <Advanced search>. Select index "All words" and type family name followed by a word from the title.

 

Author search via <Index search>

Author index is displayed beginning with that family name.

Select names with initials and/or first names you want from the index list. Note: an author with initial J. may be the same author as one with first name John.

A title list is displayed. From this, select the titles you want.

Family name + initial

(e.g. Smith,J.)

Author index is displayed beginning with that family name plus initial.
Select names with initials and/or first names you want from the index list. Note: an author with initial J. may be the same author as one with first name John.
A title list is displayed. From this, select the titles you want.
Family name + prefixes + initial (e.g. linde van der,r) Author index is displayed beginning with that family name and that prefix and that initial.
Select names with initials and/or first name desired from the index. Note: an author with initial P. may be the same as an author with first name Peter.
Title list is displayed. Select publications desired.

Using wildcards

Family name + initial

(e.g. sm$th,j )

Part of author index is displayed, in which variants of family name (smith, smyth) appear along with letter r as first initial or first letter of first name.
Select names with initials and/or first names you want from the index list. Note: an author with initial J. may be the same author as one with first name John.
A title list is displayed. From this, select the titles you want.

Linde van der,r*1) All publications by authors named van der Linde with (first) initial R or first name beginning with R. You will therefore find publications by among others the authors Rob van der Linde and Richard Q. van der Linde.

Sm$th$,a* 1)

All publications by authors named Smith, Smyth, Smythe with initials A.B. or a combination of initial A or first name beginning with letter A, and second initial B or middle name beginning with B. You will therefore find publications by among others the authors Smith, A. and Smith, A.B.D. and Smith, Anthony B.D. and Smyth, Anthony Bernard and Smythe, Anthony Bernard C.

1) When entering an author's name with first initial or full first name you can only use a wildcard after the first initial or (part of) the first forename.

Note. If your result is a very long list, use options for restricting results provided under <Advanced search>. You may then restrict by entering a second author, a title word, year of publication, language, or a type of publication.
